President Bola Tinubu stated on Sunday in Lagos that the government’s policies and actions over the past 15 months will soon provide significant relief for Nigerians. Tinubu, who highlighted that his administration has made steady progress in rebuilding the nation through legal and judicial reforms, vowed to continue promoting the rule of law, adhering to the principles of separation of powers, and accommodating dissenting views within the framework of Nigerian law. The President made these remarks at the opening of the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Lagos. The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, disclosed this in a statement signed on Sunday night titled, ‘President Tinubu at NBA Conference: We Will Continue to Promote the Rule of Law and Tolerate Dissenting Voices.’ He addressed the conference’s theme, ‘Pressing Forward: A National Posture for Rebuilding Nigeria.’ Represented at the event by his deputy, Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu assured Nigerians that while making difficult decisions to change outdated practices may result in challenging outcomes, his administration’s policies and actions will bring relief soon. “Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, while I recognize the temporary existence of some daunting challenges facing us as a nation, I urge you all not to adopt a defeatist attitude; instead, we should remain resolute in working towards the country of our dreams. “It is clear that Nigeria cannot continue on the path of the past if we are to ensure sustainable development. Therefore, we must clean the Augean stables and chart a proper course for rebuilding the nation. “I understand that altering the status quo requires difficult decisions and changes, which inevitably come with hard outcomes. However, I am confident that this is a passing phase and that our policies and actions, as an administration, will soon bring relief,” he stated. He commended the NBA’s distinguished history of championing democratic ideals and promoting the rule of law. “Let me reassure you all that this administration will continue to uphold the rule of law, adhere to the principles of separation of powers, and tolerate dissent within the bounds of the law,” Tinubu declared. The President urged Nigerian lawyers and citizens to join his administration in working towards the Nigeria of everyone’s dreams, noting that the nation cannot continue to follow past practices if it is to achieve sustainable development. He also thanked the Supreme Court for consistently supporting good governance and democratic principles in Nigeria, citing the recent verdict granting financial autonomy to local government councils. He noted that The judgment “will spur the much-desired developments at the grassroots level,” and he expressed confidence that “more strategic and reform-oriented legal interventions will be achieved” by the third arm of government.
